IOS Guest Checkout for Dollar Shave Club App

Sketch, Proto.io, Principle, Photoshop, 2018

Problem: With a new business model rolling out, the digital design team needed to create a new guest checkout for the Dollar Shave Club application. (Being the sole designer for their mobile application for IOS and Android, this was quite the feat.)

Process: Going from researching competitors, (Harry's, Gillette), and successful guest checkout flows, (Nordstrom Rack, Urban Outfitters), to compiling our current user flows for registered users and edge cases, creating lo-fi wireframes, and storyboards, (for possible successful executions), to then incorporating user interface elements, and prototypes for user research, show the key steps of the process for this structural addition. With the user research we received, we were able to determine the best solution for the new business model.

Solution: The flow would start with Onboarding, take the customer through our new business model, select their starter set for auto-renewal, and with multiple breakdowns of the box content and legal information, they are guided to checkout and create an account. With the account created, the billing and shipping is entered and final payment submitted to show a celebration of the Starter Box they have purchased and is on its way. Once approved, I compiled the handoff to send to the engineering/backend team, and helped them develop the end product by providing my time and additional prototypes & specifications as needed.

In user studies, we found that it can be a challenge for users to understand the concept of restock box, starter set box, and that the user will ultimately be signing up for a reoccurring box subscription when they complete their order. After working through a few versions of the flow, updating verbiage, and adding clear visual indicators to each section/subscription/purchase throughout the steps, we were able to get clear results that helped the user in their selection with what works best for them. All while making sure to be as transparent as possible about their purchase.
